Over the Garden Wall Cosplay

"Over the Garden Wall" is an animated miniseries that premiered on Cartoon Network in November of 2014. It's the tale of two lost brothers, Wirt and Greg, who find themselves in the mysterious Unknown. They try and find their way home as they are led through the many locales of the Unknown via their guide, a talking bluebird named Beatrice.

This has been my favorite television show for many years, ever since I first saw it in high school. I fell in love with the spooky vintage look and the unique take on the character design. Wirt's unusual outfit, the pointed gnome hat, 1940's WWII nurses cape, and mismatched black boots, was something I immediately fell in love with. My first take on his cape was cute, but not as well made as it could have been (since this was my first lined garment and the navy blue fabric was polyester). My second attempt, shown here, is much neater and cleaner. I made the cape, which features a navy wool outside and red cotton lining, gold vintage metal buttons, and some brooches which I thought were appropriate for the character. The plaid pants are also wool, pattern matched with a zipper and vintage metal button closure. The white shirt was thrifted, and the buttons changed to be black instead of white. The hat was made from scratch, with the same red cotton lining, stiff interfacing and wire at the base, and matching wool on the brim. It also has earflaps, which were nice when it was worn outside on cold days. The frog stuffed animal was made with felt and face painted on. Worn with black boots and white socks.

When worn to Motor City Comic Con, the voice of Wirt, Elijah Wood, complimented me on my cosplay and asked to take a picture of me! Such a wonderful experience.
